Newcastle University

Park View Student Village

The Challenge

The existing student accommodation at Richardson Road was demolished to make way for an innovative new development – a £75 million complex comprising 1261 new bedrooms in both apartments and studios, plus social and meeting areas.

Park View Student Village wanted to stamp the area’s heritage on the reception area, where students first arrived, and in addition enhance the design of the Gaming Room, where students had access to the latest consoles and entertainment.

The Campaign

The Accommodation Team at Newcastle University had given a very specific brief for the Park View Reception, having fallen in love with an original image of the Tyne Bridge under construction. Our Design Studio came over all Miss Marple and began the search for the elusive image – finally locating the original in a museum, which we were able to secure for our client and develop into a beautiful wallpaper background to welcome students.

The Gaming Room was a fun development, bringing a Newcastle themed pixelated graphic style onto the walls, featuring the Bridge and the Angel of the North.

Both wallpapers were printed and installed by our expert Large Format Team.

The Impact

The new areas were instantly student-friendly, making the area seem much more home-away-from-home and inviting for students to spend time in.

"We set this project out with very specific ideas in mind, which provided a challenge for the AG team by somewhat limiting their creative freedom – but as always, they have delivered a fantastic end product.

The gaming room in particular is now a fantastic, unique space, with a large pixel art wallpaper (which is a very specific and difficult style to get right) showing key landmarks of Newcastle – essentially turning the city’s landscape into a sort of screenshot straight from an NES game. We are in love, and we think students like the originality of it, too!"
